Often I have pastors ask me, “How do we begin a new Women’s Ministries program when the women are hanging tight to the old ways?” Often those who struggle most with change are those who have experienced some form of rejection or instability in their lives. Allow these women to continue in their existing ministries. Encourage them to come up with a name for their small group. Then prayerfully add other small group ministries to meet the emerging needs of women within your church and community.
Every woman should be able to find a ministry within her church. Local programs may have as many small group ministries as needed. Keep in mind each group’s purpose and time frame is as varied as the need it serves. Some may exist for only a season. For example, a Mother’s Day Out Group may meet only during the school year. Other groups, such as Bible study and prayer, will be ongoing.
Strive to make every woman feel accepted and needed. Get to know each woman’s time constraints and circumstances. This will help you find a place for her to become involved. Avoid assuming a Ministry Group (small group) is a failure simply because every woman doesn’t attend. Remember each group is designed to meet a specific need.
This Sunday, make it a point to notice the kinds of women who attend Sunday School and church. Are any single, newly married, professionals, mothers of preschoolers, empty-nesters, divorced, caregivers, widowed, or with special needs? Even a small church has many different types of women, each with a different set of needs and interests. This is why one group just isn’t enough to serve every woman.
You can successfully minister to the many needs of the women in your church!
